Surtout porté dans les Bouches-du-Rhône, c'est une variante de Malbec, Maubec, toponyme très répandu qui signifie mot à mot "mauvais bec". On estime généralement qu'il a désigné une forteresse inexpugnable, bâtie sur un piton rocheux (un bec).
